Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, specifically marking the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to ensure all enslaved people were freed, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Our 5th year celebrating on the Plaza, this day is about remembrance, freedom, culture, and celebration! Presented in collaboration with Love and Happiness, this year’s Juneteenth celebration features Sudan Archives. First emerging as a self-taught avant-garde violinist, Sudan Archives combined left-field strains of R&B, hip-hop, and experimental electronic music with hypnotic string loops and the fiddling style of West Africa.
